Free Quit Services for Medicaid Clients
In Washington state, Medicaid coverage now includes a quit-smoking benefit.
The benefit means that Medicaid clients can get free help quitting smoking, which may include counseling and prescription drugs.
To get free help quitting, clients can start by calling the toll-free Washington State Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-2NO-FUME in Spanish.)
Quit coaches will support eligible clients with free counseling, nicotine patches or gum, and by recommending a prescription medication if appropriate.
The cost of the prescription, written by the client’s doctor, is also covered.
Clients can also get quit support by talking to their doctor about quitting and the free services offered by the quit line.
By calling the quit line, people can double their chances of quitting successfully. More than 100,000 people in Washington have already called the quit line for help.

Eligibility
- All client 18 years and older and all pregnant women regardless of age who are enrolled in a Department of Social and Health Services medical
program are eligible for free quit support through the Tobacco Quit Line, as well as prescription medication through their doctor.
- Clients enrolled in Family Planning Only, Acute and Emergent, and Take Charge programs are not eligible for prescription drugs and quit support services provided by the primary care physician.
These clients are eligible for services from the Tobacco Quit Line.
