A lot of times people don’t realize the complexity of quitting. I like to
encourage people to call even if they’re not ready to quit because it’s
really important to prepare in advance and to practice quitting until
they’re ready to quit for good. Every caller is unique in his or her
own way, and it’s so positive to hear from callers who have health issues
and to see them making the positive step to leading a healthy lifestyle.

I love helping people make that important step toward quitting. Often
when people call, they tell me they want to quit but don’t think they
can. After we talk and come up with strategies, I love hearing them
say, “I can do this!” at the end of the call. I try to help people
realize they have the strength to quit smoking and I feel honored
to be a part of something that will not only improve their health,
but their lives.

Just making the call is the most important step in the quitting process.
One woman told me that she had put the quit line number on her fridge
and looked at it every day for eight months. After finding the courage
to actually make the call, she was ready to give up the cigarettes for
good. By making the call, people begin a journey that will change their
lives.

I’ve been through the quit process and I can relate to it. It’s rewarding
to know I have an impact on people’s lives. Callers say, “Wow I didn’t
think of that. That really helps!” and it’s nice to know I played a role
in that. I just got off the phone with a guy who had been chewing and
had successfully quit. He was so appreciative and just kept saying,
“I couldn’t have done this without you!”

I smoked for 25 years before I decided to quit. I understand how smokers
feel and what it means to give up smoking, especially if you’ve been doing
it for decades. That’s why my most rewarding experiences have been helping
long-time smokers. Some have smoked for more than 50 years! I draw on my
experience and tell people that they have the ability to change, no matter
how long they’ve been smoking.

People often carry the misconception that you can just “butt ‘em out” and
walk away, not understanding the relationship factor between their addiction
and triggers. People think they are alone, but understanding that they are
not alone is so important. When I get on the phone to answer a call, it’s not
a participant number or a file, it’s a person.
